The Government has launched the biggest review of wedding law in England and Wales for more than 200 years. If the proposals become law they could completely transform where couples are allowed to get married.
What's changing?
At the moment legal weddings must take place in approved buildings or licensed venues.
The proposed reforms would instead focus on the person conducting the ceremony rather than the building itself. If the plans become law couples could have much more freedom to choose where they marry.
That could include gardens, beaches, woodland, family homes and many other unique locations.
For couples it means more freedom to create a wedding that reflects who they are rather than being limited by where they can legally marry.

Looking ahead
The Government's consultation runs until 24 September 2026.
If the proposals are approved the new law could come into effect during 2027 or 2028 although no official date has been confirmed.
